On that same first night, there was a fellow who needed to be intubated and who was having a resistance to the Super Riley the avenger captain america shirt and by the same token and painkiller we were using—he was kind of fighting it, but without it, he’d die. We had to keep increasing the dosage until it was at a point where it would knock just about anybody out. We were moving him to a gurney to take him to the ICU, and somehow he still had enough wherewithal to lift his own body weight up and onto the stretcher, which just dumbfounded everybody. Someone said, “This should never happen.” That was kind of my introduction by fire.

Super Riley the avenger captain america shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

I have a preceptor—an amazing mentor whom I’m lucky to have in charge of my training, a nurse I’m kind of tethered to—and I started by shadowing her through everything. But as the Super Riley the avenger captain america shirt and by the same token and weeks have gone on—I’m a month in—I’ve been given more and more autonomy. Which comes with more pressure, of course. I do everything from providing meds and giving injections to taking care of people who are on ventilators or who have underlying conditions; I care for IV sites and do gastric tube feedings and hang different types of antibiotics and such. I help clean and bathe patients and address wound care; I monitor people’s blood-oxygen saturation.
