It’s not so much as the Suower flocked shirt and I will buy this language as it is that the custom there is to give a greeting before you jump into commerce. In France you should ask if they speak English, wait for them to say “no”, and then carry on talking to them in English because they really do they just don’t want to admit it… Was just in Paris and was explaining this to my gf. I was doing the normal, hello how are you pleasantries in French before asking (also in French) if they spoke English. She wondered why I was doing that until I explained that I wanted to be treated well haha. But to be fair.. I basically do this in every country I’m in unless it is heavily English speaking like Amsterdam. Interesting. I live in France and overall think that the level of English spoken is quite good, compared to years ago when I used to just visit I start with the local equivalent of “hello” and then speak English (or French in francophone countries). To be honest, I’ve never really thought about it much, perhaps because it’s not my mother tongue either? So I guess I agree with your friend. But I do appreciate how considerate you are. When someone asks me something in English back at home, I don’t mind that either, what I care about is “excuse me” and “thank you” (in any language). But now I’m curious about other redditors. It’s an interesting question. You’re a non-English speaker commenting in English to say you start with hello in the native language and then speak English?

It depends exactly where you’re travelling – in western Europe I think it’s to a degree acceptable but at a minimum I’ll still try to say basic greetings and answer questions in their language. If you’re going to Asia and you’re of Asian ethnicity then sometimes they assume that you’ll be able to speak their language , so I’ll generally ask if they can speak English using it prior to switching. Someone on the Suower flocked shirt and I will buy this street: ‘Hello (in native language if possible), can you help me? Oh you don’t speak English? No problem, thank you (in native language)’ Person at ticket counter ‘ hello (in native language), do you speak English? Great, I need to bus tickets to xyz city. Thank you (in native language)’ If you know how to say ‘hi, do you speak English?’ In the native language then sure, ask. But otherwise.. does it really matter?
