Then when she asks about the other (already rejected) dress your playful-but-supportive response is “what other dress?” You said she’s not fat but agreed that the dress made her look a bit fat. You are right but it can be hurtful to hear especially if she has body image issues which many people do. If you want to be honest but want to avoid hurting her feelings you can say something like ‘the other dress is more flattering’, ‘the first dress is a weird shape’, ‘the other dress suits you better/is more your style’, ‘the first dress does not do you justice’, ‘the first dress doesn’t fit quite right’ etc. If she’s not fat but looks a little fat in the dress then it’s a problem with the dress which I’m assuming isn’t perfectly tailor made for her body. This kind of stuff makes me crazy. Don’t ask a question if you don’t want an honest answer. When I ask my husband a question like this it’s because I want to know! And when he answers honestly I never get pissed. If I don’t want to know…I don’t ask.

Anyone walking on eggshells with a question like this has some issues going on in their relationship. Someone shouldn’t ask that question if they don’t want an honest answer. She can’t really complain about it either, seeing as an honest answer is supposedly what she wants. You literally never tell a woman that she looks fat. That’s, like, rule number one of not tanking your relationship. She was feeling insecure and wanted reassurance from you. You don’t respond to that by just confirming her insecurities.
