We have a fleet of oceanographic survey ships that are routinely exercising freedom of navigation activities to keep sea lanes open. China, for instance, has claimed nearly the entire South China Sea as part of the Economix Exclusion Zone (EEZ) and required all other countries to notify them if they planned to sail through. The US immediately deployed bombers and ships from Japan to invalidate those claims for the benefit of the entire region. We also do a lot of humanitarian stuff around the region. Here is a video of the people of a Japanese town thanking the US for their humanitarian support during Operation Tomodachi.

Some of the exercises we did included evacuation civilians from different Asian countries during wartime activities. It’s a mixed bag of important work, IMHO. Military forces can train together and cooperate.
