Thank you <3 I’m still young and in shape and probably will feel less competent in these types of environments as those things change lol But then even sites that are equipped for this ARENT equipped for this when you have subs and gaps in schedule. Retired Early Childhood/Media Literacy teacher here. They never taught my group of Student Teachers at Uni anything about classroom management or BD kiddos. I learned thru a Mentor that I found in my school (recommended by Principal). I developed my own real strict and kind behavior modification program. My last few years before I left to have my own family. I had several troubled kiddos with problems in my limited class size of my state's limit to 20 kids. I had University Student Teachers the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this last 2 yrs. I took some SPED classes to fill extras up in my Masters Program. I was single and childless I had time.
Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt details
IDEAS: Make a short 1-2 yr certification program for endorsement at community college. For all ages include basics: Child Development, Behavior Modification, Curriculum Based Assessment, Moral Education (like Character Counts), Integrating Technology In the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this classroom, Multiple Intelligence Theory, etc. After 2 kids I slipped on ice and got a brain injury. Metacognition and a wonderful Neuropsychiatrist (Actually a doc of a disabled actor) (pretty cool) She taught me to use my emotional brain to compensate for my more linear logical damaged front right shaken babyesque brain. ( runon…I know) If it’s not specifically a manifestation of their disability there’s no reason to excuse their aggressive behaviors.
My site has a mix of 4 programs. It’s a Gen Ed High School first, Sped High School second, Mod-Severe High School third, and ED High School fourth. I’m a full time para assisting in the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this Sped and ED classes at the school and I’ve worked for the community schools as a sub para in the past. What I do is certainly not for everyone, but I love what I do. At the community schools, which had a full ED population that was largely gang and delinquent backgrounds, I managed to get some volatile students to ‘play ball’ with me, so to speak, while full time staff struggled. It was my element through and through. Unfortunately, the district that oversaw those community schools was not very forthcoming in hiring me, so I was hired on for a different district in the area. Despite that, I saw my fair share of violence. Hard textbooks thrown at heads (missed), tearing up classrooms, destroying property, leaving campus in defiance (not violent but still), putting holes in walls, threatening violence and death threats, etc. I can handle it, but I wouldn’t just recommend it to anyone. My transition to Sped was a massive decrease in severity from the community schools. I miss those students, but I also like having full time for the first time in my career in academics.

These students need a tender hand that can be firm when needed. It also requires an ability to adapt, shift, and modulate to fit in with the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this students to reduce their volatility. It’s not for everyone; in fact, I’d say it’s for the minority of the minority of people in education. But those of you who want to have a big impact on students who are really struggling and need that support, consider Sped and ED. It can be really fulfilling, despite the struggles. I often feel that getting parents to come in and observe makes a difference maker in change for the tough situation. It’s great if that student if offered a severe behavior management setting but the reality is many places don’t have these in place. I’ve been with a student all year that can easily send teachers and students to the hospital if we don’t react in time. Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet but it’s been close. We file reports on this kid almost daily and have been screaming at all the higher ups that he needs to be out of GE and into a SPED setting. And there still is no movement on that for next year and then we’ll have to hope that the parents will accept a transfer to the sped school in the next town over. The next step is a police report which where I live can only be made by parents of other kids in the class. And I am hoping they do that soon for everyone’s sake.
Yes this student deserves an appropriate setting but the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this other 18 in the class also deserve to not be scared to come to school or sit there crying and terrified when he kicks off or randomly starts hitting kids for no reason. They shouldn’t be hearing half the vulgar things that come out of his mouth or be grinded in just standing in line to go to lunch. So it’s great you work in a place that are equipped to deal with these issues but a lot of us are stuck in a position where we signed up to teach GE and are instead walking on eggshells all day hoping we don’t get our fingers broken or a desk thrown at us because we looked at the student the wrong way. That’s not what we signed up or are trained to deal with.
This is a sub geared towards gen ed so yes most of the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this posts you’re seeing are students placed in gen ed that absolutely shouldn’t be. And people are tired of it. Hell nah. This was in 2013/2014 when I was new, but I’ve been punched, tackled to the ground, and witnessed a kid choke and attempt to strangle to death another kid. Because they were 9 and 10, the cops couldn’t do anything, so nothing happened. The kids all had BIPs and/or were SPED, which protected them. But almost all the kids in my class had one or the other or both, yet I was not a SPED teacher. When kids are hurting others, they should not get to be in the general education classroom. The other kids suffered (like my two autistic kids who were very sweet but frustrated by the environment and would melt down because the situation was fucked up in general, but especially for them), and the non-BIP or non-severe sped kids didn’t learn much of anything that year.
Most adults go to their workplace and never deal with behavior issues. And if someone in the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this building is a behavior issue more than once or twice, they’re gone. Permanently. True, but that doesn’t mean school is where they belong. Geometry and literary analysis aren’t the solution to every troubled teenager’s problems. They belong in some other kind of structured environment. I don’t know what that would or should be, but they’re obviously not here to learn chemistry or foreign language or anything, and their presence isn’t good for the teachers, nor the legit students, nor the custodians, nor anyone else. The problem is the GE setting is not what is best for all students. Sometimes I find we shove everyone into a classroom for the sake of inclusivity at the cost of safety for the teacher, students, and sped student. We need to completely reform education in order to address this epidemic. That being said, no teacher should be subject to violence (with the exception of those who are trained to work with students with violent behavior). I get a Para 1 day a week. We can’t keep them. It’s crazy. Our district pays paras $14 per hour with no benefits. Most leave for fast food or a box store.
That’s insane. I make about double that as a para and receive excellent benefits. Of course they’re going to choose an easier job if it’s basically minimum wage. I agree for sure, but also schools need to have the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this support they need. I worked in a therapeutic day school where getting injured by a student was a daily risk, but every single kid had a 1:1 and there was a safety plan in place for every student with people trained to deescalate situations when they arose (actually my position at one point). I am all for inclusion and fighting ableism. There is absolutely a problem of gen Ed teachers being prejudiced even against sped teachers (my wife has worked at two schools like that). But at the same time, districts and schools need to be held accountable. What’s the point of having laws, regulations, and case load limits if they’re NEVER going to be followed?!
I think the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this problem is that general education teachers, in classrooms with 20-30 students, who did not have a reasonable expectation of being physically harmed at work, are being routinely physically harmed at work. The problem is the other students in the general education classroom, special education students or not, who are having their right to an education and right to physical safety in a place they are legally required to be completely ignored. In my case, the student who is leaving bruises on me daily does not have an IEP and is not a special education student. He is fully verbal and capable of communicating – he is fully capable of not hitting his grandmother when he is upset with her.
Again, I am not a special educator. I am a general education teacher with a class of 18 kindergarteners, 17 of which are being taught that it’s okay that they and their teacher is being exposed to violence daily. This has been my reality every year teaching so far- 3 years in, I have yet to see a general education classroom without routine physical agression, even when observing older established teachers on my team. In reality most of the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this complaints I’m seeing are about the system, and not about disabled students that are agressive as a manifestation of their disability. I agree with everything you’re saying, and the vast majority of comments are more so about the system failing the students than the students themselves. It’s just a few comments and posts I’ve seen over the past few weeks that compelled me to make this post, I don’t think this is some universal issue we’re having with teachers placing blame on students for their behaviors or anything like that. I’m fully on board with GE teachers having more power in deciding if a student is inappropriately placed in their class and having a streamlined process for getting them appropriately placed. My gen ed classroom is not equipped to handle the type of students discussed here, yet I have three in a class of 24, and if one has an issue, the other 2 join in and the other 21 students are left to fend for themselves. I’m not trained to handle those students bur admin thinks it’s so cool to mix them into my class. Plus I teach middle school and these are boys that are 5ft 8 and 150 lbs. It’s dangerous.
You absolutely shouldn’t be left to deal with these students alone and I’m sorry the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this school is failing you and your students, you deserve an adequately staff classroom for the students they ask you to teach. At our school inclusion is accompanied with paras and if the students are causing a major disruption they’re simply removed for the day or their inclusion is reevaluated if it’s a constant issue. I think the problem is inappropriate placements. It is really hard to get kids who are violent moved out of the GE classroom, often taking years. I’ve seen this as a teacher and also as a family member (my parents adopted multiple special needs kids, 2 of which were violent starting in elementary school). Districts don’t want to pay the extra cost.
You nailed it right on the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this head. It’s expensive to send them to a private program if they don’t have an appropriate place for them in district, which they often don’t due to staffing and funding issues, so they let teachers suffer. I basically let the 3 of them hang out in the back of tge room while I get the rest started on some work and then try them for a few minutes. It’s messed up on a good day. Well said. I work in a private school where we are trained in deescalation techniques, as well as physical restraints in the case that the deescalation does not work. I have heard that district schools often have students who are just as dangerous but that the teachers are untrained on how to keep their classes AND the violent student safe. For this reason alone, I have no intention of leaving where I am, lol. In the Before Times, SPED was this place for kids with learning disabilities or cognitive issues. There were no aggressive kids in SPED. It was not expected for Generic Public School #428 to be equipped to handle such students, little less try and integrate them into the general population of students or subject the gentle SPED kids (some of whom that cannot physically or mentally defend themselves) to these kids.
And now, every school is virtually expected to handle these kids, even though the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this schools themselves are only minimally set up for it. People EXPECT it. If you sign up to work with aggressive kids, and are trained for it, that’s one thing. But most people deciding on being a teacher are not signing up to work with what sometimes feels like a mental patient, and the only way to protect themselves or make the school take corrective actions is to file police reports. I was a BT for years. If I had filed a police report for being attacked it would be weekly. However, that was my job and it was my job to protect other students and staff (and myself!) from injury while also allowing students with aggressive behaviors a chance to attend school. There are always going to be some older kids who still have aggressive behaviors but mostly it’s something that improves through early intervention in elementary school and it’s so essential to keeping kids safe they they do learn how to control their behaviors before they’re adult sized. I’m a substitute para for 2+ years (4+ yrs school exp), and that means I work in both Gen Ed and SPED. I couldn’t agree more with OP. I really don’t know if Gen Ed teachers/paras receive the same training as those in SPED but I know for certain that they don’t have the experience of working in the program, and working with kids who have aggressive aspects of their disability. I think that’s all there is to it.
The first day I worked in a SPED classroom was a little nerve-wracking because I’d only had Gen Ed experience up to that point, and I can understand the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this shock for someone who has always worked in Gen Ed hearing about students in SPED displaying aggressive behavior but now I’m used to working in SPED classes for students of various needs around the district, and it doesn’t bother me. But when I work with Gen Ed teachers, I watch teachers work with a student having a bad day with the teacher having obvious frustration, irritation, or diamay on their face because it’s out of the norm, but the SPED teachers work with a kid having a regular Tuesday of having a meltdown because they weren’t serving what they wanted at lunch, or the tag on their shirt was itchy but they can’t explain, or because they didn’t want to put their shoes on, etc. with a normal pleasant expression or the exaggerated “sad” expression saying something akin to “you are making me sad, because we can’t go to recess if you can’t put your shoes on” because again, they have the experience doing something. If it’s your first time using a stick shift it’s gonna be hard when you’re used to an automatic, but if you’ve used a stick for years, it’s easier, down to experience doing it that way.
I’m not saying that Gen Ed teachers don’t have other concerns, they certainly do, with making sure their students are functioning at their learning level not to mention management of much larger class sizes, but I think all the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this discrepancies in levels of surprise comes down to experience with a particular type of setting. Sure seems like this post, and the earlier post about the reality of education are related. If kids can’t think, they can’t control their emotional outbursts either. Those socialist teachers did their jobs the last few decades. We got rid of meritocracy. All kids can be equally violent, confused, and behind grade level. I can guarantee the majority of people don’t understand the SPED population, practices, or how the department functions realistically. I’ve worked with admins and educators who are known for doing everything in their power to know nothing about Sp.Ed. As a former inclusive education teacher, I would write detailed safety plans regarding student warning behaviours. Unfortunately, it was the EAs that put themselves in danger by ignoring the strategies outlined for their safety. One EA continually antagonized a student by getting in his space when he was upset, even though the safety plan said to step back out of reach and use hand signals because verbal instructions did not work once the student was elevated. This EA became injured because of their proximity, and eventually they “didn’t have to” work with the “aggressive” student anymore.
You’re not wrong, OP, but sadly, many people who don’t have someone who would qualify for SpEd or an IEP or 504 in their lives don’t understand that intervention isn’t a magic pill that stops everything. If there was an on/off switch for the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this behaviors we cover with IEP and 504 plans, then…we wouldn’t need extended IEP or 504 plans. It would just be like, “Oh, Bob has attention problems? Fabs, just present it in this format and he’ll be fine. Done.” And he never has attention problems ever again. No. Bob’s always going to have attention problems, folks. Always. Accommodations are ongoing and used to lower the likelihood of undesirable behaviors or outcomes, not really eliminate them. Sure, we HOPE it eliminates them, but just because Bob sometimes still has attention problems doesn’t mean that he can’t or shouldn’t be in a classroom teaching a curriculum that he needs for graduation. Even if he taps his pencil, hums under his breath, or wiggles his chair and annoys other students.
This is a light example, obviously, when we’re talking about aggressive behaviors like slamming doors or yelling. But here’s the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this thing… it totally equates across the board. Becky might be a door/drawer/desk slammer. And accommodations have helped her be able to control the impulse to take that action when she’s frustrated, but there’s going to be a bad day or a bad week or even…a bad month… where something is going on internally or externally and she can’t hold onto the restraint, even with accommodations. Someone’s going to get upset that there’s someone who slams the cupboard in their class or be scared of the fact that she does it so hard and she’s so strong. Or that she might break something. But that doesn’t mean that Becky doesn’t deserve the opportunity to learn proper etiquette from her typical peers, learn how to be frustrated in a social setting, or how to accommodate her own needs by asking for a break or pass to the resource room.
It’s legitimately only through practice that some of these “aggressive” or “behavior” kids will learn to control their hands, feet, and voices. And I’m not at all saying it’s right or should be allowed for them to take it out on other human beings physically. However, with a good progress report and shown growing control of the Stitch I love the smell of freshly Brewed Coffee in the Morning shirt Also,I will get this behaviors that sparked their educational plan, they should be allowed to try …and even fail. Maybe multiple times. If they’re failing too much or too often, perhaps it’s time to take a step back and re-evaluate how best to help them, which includes considering least restrictive environment. I know it’s not comfortable for everyone – life isn’t comfortable for everyone all the time. We all have to learn how to be together.
