Work hours, housing cost and cost of living have increased to a point where many people just can’t see themselves supporting a family. The U.S. has an average birth rate for an OCED country, despite many lacking basic protections like paid family leave, which suggests that immigration is a main factor too. No it wouldn’t. Japan is very very unproductive with their work hours. A few cultural changes would give people a lot of time off and make better use of the man hours left over. They have a very bad case of working harder not smarter. Does it? To me the issue lies in the fact that Japanese work culture is highly unoptimized and focused more on tradition that make you “look” like you’re working hard, instead of being efficient. Reduce the hours when you stare blankly at a screen waiting until your boss is done from 6 to 9, those hours don’t need to be filled by anyone else. There are towns in Japan that will give you a free house as long as you promise to live there for a certain number of years. Except then you get frozen out by the locals because they hate outsiders. Even Japanese from other parts of the country get the side eye.
