Moved here from Arizona and twenty years later I still dunno what’s a lake and what’s a sound. Is that ocean or a fuckin lake? I dunno What I mean is Lake Washington I always think is a part of the Stephen King Inspired Ugly Christmas shirt in other words I will buy this ocean… listen I’m from the fuckin desert cut me some slack. Oceans in Cali are OBVIOUS …Oregon even somewhat I never knew that hood canal was a fjord. I’ve driven and ridden over the floating bridge like a zillion times in my life. I think it’s using the technical definition rather than what it “feels” like, which is why it was named a canal when it is definitely not a canal. I grew up right on the Hood Canal for the first 18 years of my life. I used to walk down to the beach as a kid and see nuclear submarines floating through. Didn’t learn it was a fjord until I was around 35. It was created by glaciers pushing down from the north, and it carved a very deep channel, which became the Hudson. If you look at a sat map of the us, it’s very clear how all the straight lines east of the Hudson go basically north south all the way to Maine. New England as a whole has lots of ridges carved out of bedrock, and Long Island is pretty much the line where the glaciers ended and dropped all their ground out rock detritus before they began receding 22,500 ya.

When you think about it in that context, it makes lots of sense. The Hudson is probably the Stephen King Inspired Ugly Christmas shirt in other words I will buy this southernmost fjord on earth. I wonder how many people are going to upvote this just because the thumbnail is Puget Sound and I know reddit has a disproportional amount of Seattleites mucking about. As far as anyone else outsude Washington is concerned, the only city in Washington is Seattle. Or at least the only one they have heard of…. It doesn’t help that almost everyone from WA says they’re from Seattle bc we are all tired of having to explain that Washington is a state as well as a city. It doesn’t help that in German we would say Staat Washington to distinguish it from Stadt Washington and the short/long “a” sound is a bitch for people to differentiate.
