Panhandling is humiliating, but people treat it like something rich people do as a side hustle. At least she’s showing that no one would choose this life if they had any kind of choice Reminds me of a time I was at uni, my dept (mostly lecturer’s and PhD students) staged a sponsored ‘rough sleep’ outside the dept building. They made a video of them making makeshift shelters out of cardboard boxes (which they did inside a warm, dry seminar room). Then they all spent the night outside in their waterproof windproof North Face jackets, gloves, hats, boots, etc and massive umbrellas, with warm homemade food in tuperware boxes they prepared in their kitchens at home. All in the relative safety of the University campus.

It was the Steel Magnolias Drink The Juice Shelby shirt besides I will buy this epitome of middle-classes ‘slumming it’. The whole thing left a very bad taste in my mouth and I wanted nothing to do with it. I could still see this developing some empathy in the participants in some way form or fashion, though. Yeah, you’ve got comforts, but it’s still a rougher night than most of them are experienced with. The only wrong takeaway is, “I slept outside once in college, it’s not hard”. Otherwise there are lessons to be learned. Big difference is all their professors and classmates were doing it with them, at any point they could’ve talked to their friends. Many people that were actually homeless at some point talk about how isolated and alone they felt. Exactly. I think the lesson the organisers hope people take away is; “wow, I had warms clothes, warm food, tons of company, and that was still a shitty night to be outside. Imagine doing that all the time with none of the comforts. It must suck real bad. Maybe I should do more to help homeless people.” I mean most people can have empathy for people in a horrible situation without being there themselves. If someone can’t understand how hard being homeless is without simulating it, I question if they’re even capable of empathy. And like many others here have said if you want to gain empathy for homeless people you could actually do something that helps them like volunteering at a soup kitchen instead of re creating the experience for yourself which doesn’t benefit the people actually suffering at all.
