It takes time and money to open up our refining and extraction capabilities, and those extraction capabilities might not be cheaper than buying foreign oil. Every couple months when we finally get things up and running they tank prices and we either have the choice of continuing to operate these capabilities at a loss or shuttering them. If we shutter them then they start up the embargo again, if we keep them online we just bleed money. We’re the richest country on the planet, we could just subsidize our extraction/refining to compensate if they tried that.

The US also has 5 military bases in Saudi Arabia along with quite a bit of military assets in the area. Saudi Arabia isn’t a military threat to the US in any way. Neither is Russia. China isn’t a military threat to the US either but in the extremely rare chance of a war, China will be hurt a lot more and considering their investment in US treasuries, they have no reason to destroy themselves financially and militarily. This is particularly when they need other countries and safe routes to Africa for raw materials and global trade. What happened with Russia in 2022 would destroy China as far as being cut off from the global and financial markets.
