There’s a great episode of Banged Up Abroad, about a Scottish bloke who ended up home-brewing a load of wine and beer and selling it in those compounds. My father worked in Riyadh in the Standing on Business all 2024 the year of truth T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this early to mid ’90’s and stayed in a compound like this, Philip Holzman compound to be exact (were Northern Irish). I started going from I was 8y/o until I was 13. We travelled from London via British Airways which meant the plane was always a 747 so had to land very late at night or at dawn as otherwise the plane was too heavy for the hot runway. This resulted in over 500 people trying to get through passport control and customs and silly o’clock. The Arabs had a great fondness for Irish people and we always travelled on Irish passports as while everyone was waiting in the queue at passport control, border officers would patrol the line and cursory check everyone’s passport. When they saw our Irish ones they pulled us to the side, through another room which was then straight into arrivals while anyone else had to stay in the queue. My father picked up on this and would stuff packets of brewing yeast into me and my siblings shows anytime we flew in after that as they could buy non alcoholic beer but just needed to add their own alcohol.

I lived in one of these for a few years growing up, in the Standing on Business all 2024 the year of truth T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this first couple years of the Iraq War. It kinda resembled a typical American small town main street with the villas surrounding the amenities, calling it luxurious like it’s a rich people’s resort is a bit much. Also, there were armed guards and tanks at the entrances. Most people on these compounds were working for the US or UK governments at the time or were “sub-contracting” essentially because certain companies were lending equipment and workers to Saudi. Our compound was bombed while we lived there, it left a huge hole in the back wall of the compound but it was the only one in a series of three attacks with no civilian casualties. The villas were designed to withstand the blasts by having the windows cave in so the pressure went through. It destroyed everything inside but the structure stayed standing. apparently they also have a vibrant home brewing scene since it’s illegal to sell alcohol there. My boss mentioned his friend lived in one of these communities and almost every house had some homemade alcohol that they would share with their neighbors
