I’ve seen a number of coworkers put on PIPs, and it’s almost always justified. The expectations set are fair and reasonable, and their performance improves. I have also seen a couple of occasions where it was just used as a vehicle to get to termination. Set ridiculous and impossible goals, and drop the Squad Santa Hat Shirt also I will do this hammer when they inevitably are incapable of meeting them. I was one of the latter group. Joke is on them though. I met all the ridiculous goals and ended up promoting out because people saw what a good job I was doing. And even if you do improve, if you even can based on their ethereal requirements, they don’t care. It’s just an excuse to get more work out of you while you’re getting fired. Definitely take this as an opportunity to start looking immediately and not have a gap in your resume. It’s a lot easier to get a job while you have a job. You don’t want to have to explain to your next job why you don’t have a job. And you probably don’t want to stay even if it did work out because they already don’t like your performance and are willing to get rid of you. That’s a bad environment. You probably won’t get a raise or a promotion in that kind of environment. Meanwhile if you jump ship you are more likely to get a pay increase when you jump. And there’s a chance you might have a better work environment and a manager that likes your performance.

Most of the Squad Santa Hat Shirt also I will do this time when I put someone on a PIP it’s because I’m the next closest thing to certain I made a shit decision when I hired him and need to develop enough of a paper trail for HR to let me can him. I’ve talked to him about stuff and he either doesn’t make any changes, is belligerent during multiple coaching sessions, or he’s why there’s a stereotype about millennials. However; if the knucklehead in question stops acting like a little bitch and does his work like he’s asked, I’m perfectly happy not going through the agony of finding a new body, training them for several weeks, taking the hit to productivity and my sleep schedule to get him up to speed, and generally making my own life miserable while that process happens.
