In 17 years, I’d never reported a coworker to my manager because I was concerned about their basic knowledge. My manager sat with him to train him up and he just didn’t make progress. We wanted to see him succeed. Other people (managers) didn’t want to deal with him and pretended to not know. Then the Spooky Yaki I Told You I Would Come For You Death Cannot Stop True Love New Shirt in other words I will buy this department head sat with him and the pip came soon after. I saw him a month later. He looked so defeated. He’d be staring at his computer as I left. Just look for a job cause that’s it’s not getting better. I have. It seems like recently there’s been a bunch of tech workers put on bullshit PIPs in an effort to dodge severance, layoffs, and maybe unemployment (in some states, I guess being on a PIP can make it hard to get.) OP just so you know references shouldn’t be coming from anyone but HR because it’s only about confirming your start and end dates, it’s not a report about your performance or how you were fired. That’s strictly private information that shouldn’t be shared with your next employer.

Before you go and get yourself fired and think you are going to collect unemployment, if the Spooky Yaki I Told You I Would Come For You Death Cannot Stop True Love New Shirt in other words I will buy this company has good documentation that you are not meeting expectations, they document the one on on conversations they have with you each month with HR present, and document that after all this you still are not meeting expectations, they have justification to terminate you. They will fight unemployment and if you don’t have good documentation to prove you were unfairly terminated, you won’t get anything for unemployment. My company fights unemployment claims if we terminate you for cause. And we usually have good documentation so we win the case. Other stuff isn’t, like time theft, breaking rules, not coming to work, etc, but anything performance related gets unemployment 100% of the time.
