I’ve been homeless for 11 years during my life, finally have a family and a low-income apartment. My partner and I are doing everything we can to save despite a toddler but we have no idea how much to save or even how to start the Spent My Adult Money On Action Figures T-Shirt and by the same token and process of even getting a condo… I recently looked up the current rent on an old apartment I used to live in. It has literally doubled in the last 10 years: 2bd, 2 bath townhouse that went from $750 to $1500 per month, and that’s basically the entry level option in my area. Average national monthly rent was $27 in 1940. It didn’t hit $71 until 1960. Just to give an idea of how ridiculously fast rent has increased over time. The other part of the problem is business will just raise prices to keep profitability at same level, so no real gain?

Another CNN article, from 2021, shows productivity outpacing the minimum wage.Adjusted, “half our politicians” saw the minimum wage increase from $7 to $12 an hour between the time the entered the work force and into their late twenties. In the last 15 years, adjusted, it peaked at $9 but has dropped back to $7.25. I think it’s more so that they are deep in the pockets of companies who have thousands of minimum wage employees and a vested interest in that rate staying as low as possible. They aren’t stupid, they’re fucking greedy. My Oma wants me to get married before I have a kid. Okay, Oma, but you gotta pay the medical bills because while we both make a little over minimum wage helping my partners family, we do not have health insurance, so I need state insurance. While I would LOVE to be able to follow in her and my mothers footsteps, it’s one or the other. I know people may judge me for it, and I do feel some shame, but I know that it’s the the least risky way finically and my child deserves a better life than I had and I’m not risking financial security over doing it ‘correct way’. its almost impossible to live off of $15 an hour now. if you think landlords and management companies wont get greedy, or make up for paying their employees more by raising your rent…………
