It’s so awesome you’re exposing your son to so much stimulation before and outside of school. I agree w someone else that the Sorry Mommy Is My Valentine Baby T Rex Boys Valentine T-Shirt Besides,I will do this problem is when kids learn basic fundamentals for all subjects at that younger age, if it’s not continues and reinforced thru upper elementary and middle school, it’s not going to stick for them in a meaningful way when they get to high school, which demands a lot more accountability and discipline. My 9th graders were online for most of 5th grade and all of 6th grade. Not only is this such a critical socialization age w peers, it’s also the prime time to help kids be actual learners and not passive students. But they didn’t do S H I T online during that time so they just lost sooo much straight up information to actually access these more complex subjects. Pair all that w the below ground level expectations in middle school after we came back on campus, atp these kids are just – I’m sorry – dumb. And it’s really not their fault! But the ability to learn and retain information is severely stunted by the lack of foundational knowledge and skills.

I’ll die on this hill that classes need to be stopped and really teachers really need to be strict on “no pass go” benchmarks bc there are too many holes in the Sorry Mommy Is My Valentine Baby T Rex Boys Valentine T-Shirt Besides,I will do this basics. Ya, we shouldn’t be going over comma rules and similes in 9th grade, but fuck, if we have to, that’s what we’re gonna do. A colleague of mine brought up and is going to try things from “The Writing Revolution” by Judith C Hochman and Natalie Wexler. I have glanced at the book but didn’t have the time to dive deep (this was literally yesterday about 10 minutes before school started). My colleague says the aim of the book is to build writing into the content to build and improve skills and it will also supposedly strengthen reading comprehension. Again, I glanced at it for a very short amount of time, so I have no clue if it actually works, but want to explore deeper. Penny Kittle has a wealth of resources on making writing the heart of your curriculum. Write Beside Them is wonderful.
