Edited to add: £450 a month with today’s interest rates would only get you a ~£80k loan. You can’t get much house for that anywhere anymore. £450 is absurdly low for a mortgage. We recently had to remortgage on a mere £118k loan (it’s a shitty 1.5 bed flat) and it’s £650/monthh. Perhaps he overextended himself on finance. People can make big financial decisions without reality thinking about building in a decent buffer. I obviously don’t know if that’s what happened here but on £40k a year it sounds odd having only £150 per month after bills and expenses. Presumably there is nothing going into savings and no contributory pension scheme either. Would be interesting to see a full breakdown of OP’s expenses. Then we can see where money can be saved (if at all).

I filled my 1.4 polo with £50 in March and still have a quarter tank left I do wfh and it’s not our primary car though WFH, tbh even when i was commuting it was only about 10 miles a day total (still took an hour though) so a tank was still lasting a good 3 weeks at least. Yeah that seems absurdly low to me as well. We went to buy food *just for the weekend* that didn’t even include crazy treats like desserts, crisps or alcohol and it was close to £30. For 2 days. My husband and I spend about £50 per week on food shopping at Aldi. We meal plan but that also includes some ‘extras’ like occasional beers, chocolate, desserts. The food more than covers us for breakfast/lunch/dinner and snacks for a week (we have a takeaway on a Friday). Dinner is usually either stir-fry, chilli, curry, Spag bol or Frozen stuff usually served with Frozen veg and rice.
