I couldn’t wait to get out of my parent’s house. Granted, I had been kicked out on 3 separate occasions prior to turning 18, but the Sorry I Can’t I’m An Indoor Cat lover T-Shirt moreover I will buy this idea of living with either parent until I was 27 is close to my worst nightmare. The parents that kick their kids out at 18 just aren’t good people, plain and simple. Amongst my peers, I’m the only one who lived with my parents beyond that point, until a bit after 21. Compared to them all, when I finally moved out, I am the most successful, and I have the best relationship with my family. There are no words to mince. If you wait for your child to turn 18, and just kick them to the curb with no reason but age, you are human filth. My son is 16. He can stay here as long as he wants to. I’m working to instill ambition for self sufficiency the whole time. But once he turns 18, I told him that he can take a year off of school to figure out what he wants to do. He pretty much has a niche for engineering so I’m encouraging that. Can go to the nearby community college, handle any undergraduate business. Can decide from there to do a 4yr or trade.

There is no timetable. But I’m going to build a sense of pride in his own independence these next few years. I want him to succeed. I believe it’s the mark of a good parent is when you raise children that start out and land better than you did at their age. In todays climate, they will need as much as I can give. Starting out in the late 2020’s will be a LOT harder than it was in the mid 90’s. Children leaving at 18 is an America cultural thing, perhaps part of the historical puritan/protestant ethic that parents need to teach their children to stand up for themselves. The mindset is a lot different from continental Europe, where it is common for adult children to live in the home until adulthood, possibly until marriage, and the family structure remains closer on a day to day basis even after the children have left the home. But in today’s economy, it is harder to venture out on your own, with housing costs taking a larger percentage of income than prior times. Many adult children are living at home longer out of economic necessity. We’ll see if that fosters closer knit families or increased tension as it becomes more commonplace for American families.
