It seemed like there was a social hierarchy on the Sorry I Can’t I Have Plans With My Cat Kitty Lover T-Shirt But I will love this team like no one could say anything about them but they could talk shit about anyone…like so much for being a team. So it felt very high school clique like In August of 2022 my boyfriend and I signed up for an SN Goenka retreat together. It was his idea and I was very hesitant because of my crippling panic attacks/CPTSD but he convinced me. The meditations, discourse, and food were great. However, my room was inhospitable and I found myself unable to relax when I wasn’t meditating. It was close to 100 F in the room, and there were tons of bugs including wasps that stung me. I just assumed most the rooms were like this, and when I tried to get the manager to help me she often wasn’t available, as a result I couldn’t sleep and I started having some of the worst panic attacks in my life. By day 4 I hadn’t slept in 48 hours and had been panicking off an on for 20 hours straight. There was no choice but for my boyfriend to drive me home. I was devastated, but determined to try again. I was supposed to attend a retreat this week but in anticipation for it I had a brutal 14 hour panic attack. I think my first experience traumatized me a bit especially because when I asked to leave they made me stay almost a whole day to “make sure” I was serious about leaving, making me feel utterly trapped which plays into my trauma and the reasons I have CPTSD in the first place. The center I signed up for this week is a 9 hour drive from my home and there would be no one to drive me back this time. I decided it wasn’t a good idea and cancelled. Again, I am devastated. I want the benefits of meditating for 10 days straight and am so deeply sad that my mind is broken in this way. Should I do a Goenka retreat one day or are these things just not meant for people like me? How could I work up to one? Are there any retreat centers that are very similar but more trauma informed? People with CPTSD that finished them, how did you do it?

An intensive meditation retreat like this is highly inadvisable for someome with CPTSD. I recommend a more gentle approach that places as its priority an understanding and compassion for your condition. I’m CPTSD and my first Goenka retreat was very potent medicine and critical to my healing journey. It was extremely difficult at times and I had to face some heavy anxiety – but also got to see it, accept it, let it pass. That said, I don’t have outright panic attacks, and got clearance from my shrink and from a meditation teacher. I suppose I want to say that CPTSD is a wide diagnosis and, while surely a flag, not the Sorry I Can’t I Have Plans With My Cat Kitty Lover T-Shirt But I will love this only factor in whether one can or should attend. I am surprised the Goenka screening process didn’t catch her on “crippling” panic attacks. Equanimity can’t apply when one is overtaken with hyperarousal. They flagged me, talked with the assistant teacher. She thought I would be fine because I meditate an hour each day. Oops, she was wrong. Thank you for your perspective.
