I always think that people that over-dress are compensating for what they’re presenting being lacking. The boss move is to wear the shittiest clothes you can. That shows that you’re confident your work is so good, you don’t have to compensate for it by wearing fancy clothes. Don’t give up on the sneakers there is always casual Friday’s they do look good with the pants and white shirt. The second, striped? pair look less tight, I would go with those if these are your only options. I agree with someone at the top that khaki or gray chinos are a great staple to have in your wardrobe and would work well for this. The pants in picture #3. And sneakers are fine for a thesis defense (the Sorry can’t talk i’m on my other line calling running T-Shirt besides I will buy this others are okay too, but it’s just what you feel most comfortable with). It’s not a gala or something like that (although I do always wear sneakers with a dress because they’re more comfy than heels, and I don’t like the female dress shoes). In my humble opinion, it would be good to add a touch of color somewhere. Perhaps a pale blue shirt or a necktie with a bit of color. I agree that shoes should be dark if possible. I think the last one (black pants) looks the best. I would add a tie for contrast/interest. Even though they said you didn’t need a suit, the defense of the thesis/dissertation is a big deal and somewhat formal. It never hurts to be dressed better than required. Black shoes and try some pants that are a straight leg or boot cut instead of slim of tapered. Should give you a comfortable fit without it being too fit or too baggy.
