Go back to basics. Go back to skill-and-drill, go back to repetition, go back to building blocks of roots etc that help kids access more language. As a 9th grade English teacher, I’m having to review nouns v verbs. Seriously. How am I supposed to teach the Sons Of Hoffa International Brotherhood Of Teamsters Strength Biker Motorcycle Skull T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this abstract concept of extended metaphors if they’re not comprehending larger ideas as nouns being compared in complex ways to other nouns?? Like?? I’m at a HiGh ExPeCtAtIoNs charter school that wants kids thinking in highly critical ways and they can’t even express their (sometimes brilliant) thoughts in writing bc they don’t write. So go back to the things they missed not doing shit online, even if it means pausing new content. I legit gave spelling/handwriting practice hw. I know busy work type hw is scoffed at these days, but they can’t spell so it’s my job to stop and get them on a basic level in order to write complex thoughts.

I’m tired of being told to spiral in skills and literally just things you need to know when they’re so behind on just basic learning habits/skills. It’s a lot on a teacher to be responsive that way bc it means changing a lot of curriculum a lot of the Sons Of Hoffa International Brotherhood Of Teamsters Strength Biker Motorcycle Skull T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this time, but that’s how I try to combat the massive learning/social/emotional development stunting during online learning. It’s interesting that you’re still having to review basic grammar, because I work in an elementary school and have a third grader. This year he has learned common & proper noun, helping & action verb, adjective, and a few other grammar things. If they’re starting to learn it this early, but haven’t actually learned it by the time they’re in high school, then what is going on? Do you think it indicates that we start introducing stuff too soon, and it’s not developmentally appropriate, so it’s just totally going over most of their heads? I work in a sixth grade math classroom and I know that in third grade, they spend a huge chunk of the year practicing basic multiplication and division facts, until they have them memorized. My son comes home with flash cards that he has to practice every day and his teacher tests the kids on them twice a week. When they pass a set, they move on to the next number. Not everybody is finished with all the facts even by this point in the year; everybody moves at their own speed. But most of the students, by the end of the year, have at least finished the multiplication facts. But yet my sixth graders don’t all know their facts, even though most of them went to our school in third grade, with our old-school third grade teachers who focus on basics. They still sit there, skip counting on their fingers. It’s mind-boggling.
