I had an old map of a city in Spain and asked the Some People Are Like Slinkies Colorful Rainbow T-Shirt but in fact I love this taxi driver for “Avenida Generalissimo Franco”. The driver responded “No existe tal calle. Vivemos en una democracia”. My Spanish was just good enough to cotton on that the street had been renamed after Franco’s death and the driver was slightly put out at the mention of his name. Wanting to pay for something in Ibiza and having only very limited Spanish (and no Catalan) I said “Me puede pagar” instead of “Se puede pagar”. The bloke was very amused at the idea that he would pay me! After a long flight, walked out to the edge of the curb, looked to the right, saw no cars coming… Almost got collected by a bus coming the other way as they obviously drive on the right. I was in Amsterdam going from place to place and smoking a bit ….I was absolutely famished so I thought I’d head up to the Damrak to get some scran because MUNCHIES….at the time I was working as waiter so I thought I would order a few things and carry them on one arm…..everything was cool until I got back to the hotel which happened to be owned by the turks,…who are definitely anti drunk stoned British….I was warned that if I didn’t eat it I would have it for breakfast,. So trying to be a clever dick I’m trying to climb the stairs and eat,…at exactly the same time a gaggle of GERMANS came stomping down and bumped right into me….the food went everywhere and I was told rather sternly how in the hell us British won the war….I mean seriously…..sour krauts

I walked the Some People Are Like Slinkies Colorful Rainbow T-Shirt but in fact I love this Camino de Santiago, about ten years ago. The Norte route. I’d packed my rucksack in anticipation of a bloody good walk, and realised in only had my old iPod to keep me occupied in quiet moments, so threw in some abridged books I’d recently bought, that had some fantastic cover art. They were thin and light to carry, and I didn’t stop to consider anything else about them. Along the way, I got chatting to a lovely South African couple, who were walking the Norte before settling down back home and having kids. The guy was a great laugh, always had an encouraging word, and generally had a sense of calm to him. His sense of humour was spot on as well so I was always cracking jokes and observations. One night in one of the albergues (like a B&B / hostel), he happened to ask if I had anything to read, so I handed over a copy of Borneo, Celebes, Aru, by the great naturalist Alfred Russell Wallace, Fighting in Spain, by George Orwell and Can-Cans, Cats and Cities of Ash, by Mark Twain. Two of them dealt very much with the wonders of nature (and evolution theory) and science, and the other was written by a democratic socialist who had increasingly disabused the importance of religion in everyday life. He glanced over them and had a little flick through, but didn’t seem to show much interest.
