I remember in 2010 when I was at a restaurant and this woman tried to tell me I would never get a job with my nose piercing. I laughed in her face because I was already working in a professional field and no one had ever mentioned my nose piercing as an issue. I moved back to NYC last year after living in northern England for a couple of years, and it was like my eyes were opened as to just how much styles have changed in that time. At first I thought all the baggy jeans and crop tops and platform shoes I was seeing were hideous (a return to the worst of my high school days, basically, after being in strictly skinnies for over a decade), but I’ve really come to embrace some of these silhouettes. My personal faves now are some straight-leg tailored trousers (like the aritzia effortless pant or the reformation mason pants) with a more form-fitting top or sweater. I like this. I really wish this subreddit learned this concept more often. Soooo many people in here just turn up their nose at any trend and are automatically like “that’s ugly” without giving it a chance and letting themselves get used to seeing it over time and just… being curious to see if it grows on them.

It is interesting how two totally different cuts of denim (a slim, tapered high-waist cut for 2014 and a straight-leg, high waist cut for 2023) have both been described as “mom jeans”. Also how stores now label slim-straight jeans as “skinny jeans”. I love these observations! The original athleisure look was absolutely wearing the black compression tights and the fleece to do things other than work out. It was definitely black and really strong colors, sometimes neon, especially that neon coral and neon chartreuse.
