I’ve just been reading through lots of comments and I have concluded that the Software Engineer Dictionary Definition Person Who Solves Problems You Can’t T-Shirt it is in the first place but English language is filled with ‘rules’ that are followed by exception after exception. The English language is an absolute nightmare to master. If a grammatical rule doesn’t clarify anything, and the only reason to obey it is that it annoys the people who know the rule, it’s of no value. When rules are broken more often than they are followed then it isn’t a rule, no matter what a pedant might say about it. My goodness, thank you! It’s not just years, I see these mistakes made every day in the US and it mildly affects my well being. The ones that drive me crazy are when in a single sentence they get it right and wrong next to each other. Saw a “mom’s and dads” the other day. Tangentially I’ve also seen “would of” and “kind’ve” in the same sentence and I thought surely this person was put on this earth to test my patience No, that would be the fashion of 1990, not the decade. The decade is plural so the apostrophe for possession comes AFTER the S. Just to be clear: you’re saying my example would be for the fashion of 1990, not 1991. That would be ’91’s fashion’ I don’t think phrases like “’90s fashion” are meant to be based on a possessive construction, and shouldn’t include a possessive apostrophe at all in general.

Ok then not for OP’s sake but for the Software Engineer Dictionary Definition Person Who Solves Problems You Can’t T-Shirt it is in the first place but sake of everyone else reading this, they are not universally correct. They are expressing a stylistic convention that is very common now. Other editorial styles exist, for example the one I was taught in grammar school in the 1980’s where the teacher absolutely mandated the apostrophe must be used there. And which I continue to use as a form of educated trolling to needle the pedantic. Especially the ones who believe “style” can possible have “factually correct” in the first place or the ones who actually interfere with the clarity of academic writing by trying to fix the wrong things. It’s not “factually incorrect punctuation” btw. It’s grammatically incorrect information. The error in ’90’s does not pertain to facts. “Rule: The plurals for letters are typically not formed with apostrophes. However, do use an apostrophe and an s for the plural of a single letter if not doing so would make the meaning unclear.”
