I actually avoid helping or interacting with 12–60 year old girls/women because I’ve had too many instances where they think I’m a creep or something. I look “rough” but it gets irritating having the majority of a single gender assume the worst of you. Older women are actually usually really sweet to me when I help them. Last year I stopped at a gas station and put some air in my tires. I ran into the store then and was nervously approached by an older man, he asked if I got my tires aired up ok. I told him I did. And he said “just wanted to check, I know young ladies can take care of themselves, but I still like to offer my help if they need it ” I thanked him and we both moved on. I noticed he went out to his truck at the gas pump. I thought it was the nicest thing ever that he came into the store when he didn’t need to, just to make sure I (some random stranger) was ok and didn’t need help. I’ve shared that story with friends and family since and have had some other women say it was rude/misogynistic of him for assuming I couldn’t do it myself. One even said she would’ve told him off. I’m like Jesus man, this is why no one wants to help anyone anymore! Not everything is some attempted power move by men to make us feel unsafe or less than….sometimes they really are just being nice and offering help to someone who looks like they might need it.

I’m a dude in my 30s. Stopped home for lunch one day a couple years back and saw an older lady on my street with a flat tire. Walked down and asked if she needed help. She literally said nothing and looked at him like he was going to murder her and took off quickly to the next aisle. He was humiliated and doesn’t even like shopping anymore because of it. I told him he’s a bit intimidating but that her reaction was uncalled for.
