In other words, the more archival the paper, the less lignin it has and the more delicate but long-lasting the paper; but the more lignin the paper has, the more durable it is, but the faster it deteriorates. It’s a conundrum. And FYI, in case nobody else has mentioned it, artificial vanilla is made from lignin, usually from a waste product from pulp mills. I once bought a body wash that smelled like this. It was Shea Moisture Peace Rose. Although, the container was a squeeze bottle and the product was so thick and a real pain to get out once it was less than half full. Never bought it again bc of that, but that smell was divine.

Similarly, old film and reel to reel audio recordings among other similar/older tech, emit a vinegar smell as they age (not sure what substance it’s caused from) letting you know it’s getting closer to expiration.
