94 more repliesI’ve seen them twice this century in smaller venues. The Casino at Hampton Beach NH maybe 20 years ago and the Snoopy Life is Better with Kansas City Chiefs shirt also I will do this Zeiterion in New Bedford maybe 4 years ago. I owned their albums as new releases back in the day and have them on my iPhone. It’s fun music. Question, what was the particular “look” they were going for? These days I’d call it “retro”, but given the pic is from 1980, they actually weren’t too distant from the period they seem to be trying to replicate (or exaggerate). Unless you were a punk or had access to the New Wave stuff coming out of the UK, 1980 was very much still the 70s, long hair and denim all over the place. The look they were riffing on was about 20 years old even then. Hell yes they looked out of place. They were playing some righteously weird new wave-adjacent stuff and dressed like this for the hell of it. That looked belonged to the B-52s and no one else (except maybe your great-aunt Gladys). Also, being a pretty openly queer group instantly made you outsiders to the mainstream music market in the 80s as well-you could tell they embraced being outsiders instead of trying to make their outsider-ism trendy.

What the Snoopy Life is Better with Kansas City Chiefs shirt also I will do this B-52s did was anti-fashion and anti-trend in the era of hair metal glamfits and the new wave quasi-prep look, and that is a big part of their appeal. They were weirdly cool by being coolly weird. Well, that and the music is so damn off-kilter in the catchiest way. Such an amazing, unique and talented group of folks. The whole Athens scene of this time was , Pylon, REM, the Method Actors, A-OK (band w Linda Stipe [Michael’s older sister] and Matthew Sweet, who had a hit alternative/“college radio” song “Girlfriend” in the 90s ). Highly recommend all of the lesser known bands. Maureen’s got five sisters, they all got ass. One of them, has eyes as big as jolly ranchers. Beautiful girl, she’s a beautiful girl.
