I was able to explain to my mom the circumstances of our friend, and that there was very little time before they would degenerate into a state not unlike advanced dementia. I told her this without actually knowing that this stage had already begun, and that the friend had not had enough time to arrange for medically assisted death (you cannot consent to that with cognitive impairment beyond a certain point). This was a surreal experience for me. Something I had studied, and which seemed to be very distant and rare, was suddenly personal and very real. There is no cure or even treatment really. Once you begin to show symptoms your life is on a timer.
