What’s happened in Georgia is especially important for this purpose. There has already been disagreements between Trump and top military brass when he was in office. As a vet I’m really sick of civilians talking about the military like its a monolithic entity of dimwits who will immediately click their heels and salute Trump. Libs and Cons both do it and it shows just how little Americans think of the intelligence of their military members, despite the near constant “thank you for your service!” bullshit. People really seem to think the military is full of stupid people too poor to understand the oath we took to defend the the Constitution and we have a moral duty to disregard any order that does not meet that criteria, as Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley reminded the entire US military in a 2020 open memorandum, during Trump’s attempt to order the military into the streets against peaceful protesters

Those are excellent points but that raises an interesting question. The lesson Trump will learn from Milley is to have loyalists like Mike Flynn at the Skip Schumaker Miami Marlins 2023 NL Manager of the Year shirt and I love this top of the COC. There’s certainly plenty who will follow those orders as they align with their views or who won’t question them. But this is the thing I’ve been considering. The military is disproportionately minority who politically are unlikely to be part of Trumps brainwashed cult. As such I believe they and anyone else who still has a brain attached will indeed disregard illegal orders. But then I wonder if you end up with a schism in the military. Those who follow Trumps illegal orders and those who don’t. And what happens if Trump tries to turn those loyal to him against those who aren’t. It’s all hypothetical at this point and it’s not something we’ve encountered. We do know that everything with Trump is always unprecedented so you can’t rule anything out. I’m sure there’s plenty of people much smarter than me both in and outside of the military who are contemplating these scenarios and trying to devise what the best way forward would be in such a case. Whatever happens, the election of 2024 will be one for the books. I only hope enough people come out against Trump that not only does he not win but those he would try to influence like last time to cheat the result will remain steadfast. That’s a question mark because they’ve spent the last couple years trying to get loyalists in and those who did their duty correctly out. In some places they were successful, in other places like Georgia, not so much.
