Being so strict that I had to lie about things like where I was going and I was never comfortable with sharing anything with them because I’d always be lectured, even when I was 18 (I’m 27 now). There was always a reason, explanation, etc. Understanding why something is wrong helps immensely in my opinion. My parents made me feel guilty for being bullied as a kid. They gave me the usual “advice” not to listen, to ignore the bullies, and to be the “bigger person” and I know that they probably didn’t believe what I told them happened daily. Frustrated by my crying and coming home with bruises and all that, sometimes they scolded me publicly and even hit me once or twice.

As a result, as an adult, I’m not able to seek help and my whole relationship with conflict and truth is twisted and massively fucked up. They never spoke to me about my education after high school. I made sure my kids knew their options loooong before they even got to high school. College or university, no other options. They both got educated and now say it never occurred to them that they could have refused. Now on to my grands. Paying lip service to tooth care.
