A few year ago before covid, when I compared what other engineers that i know make in the UK to what I make in the USA I made at least 40% more and the exact same materials, bolts, equipment, tools, electronics, welders, and more, cost less on the USA. UK living space is less, our home are larger and we Pay a lower percentage of our take home on living expenses. In the past the reason was because USA had freer markets and more competition, less regulation and control over individuals, but I don’t think that is true anymore at least according to any economic freedom index I look at. So I would expect that the gap is changing over time and I can see it go the other way if the government continues to grow, destroys free markets and private property rights as they have been doing for the past 50+ years. Unfortunately It is really easy for government to use propaganda to convince people to support more power and profit into the hands of the state which limits choices, increases the cost of living and allows them to divert trillions of dollars into the hands of politically connected people and companies. As government growth creates more homeless, poverty, increases the cost of living and more, people tend to support given them more power to solve every problem real and imagined, even problems they cause and make worse.

there are many economic analysis of those reality here is just one of many. The brightest talent converges toward the USA, so the market for talent is the most expensive in USA. this does actually have some trickle-down effect to less-talented USA residents in those same professions. USA firms also compete with other USA firms, and so there is a bidding war for talent that drives the compensation higher. a war backed by the biggest corporate coffers in the world.
