I started with 60% female team and we were all embedded software engineers. Years passed and they’ve moved on to QA or managers. For the Shut Up And Take My Money Meme Shirt Apart from…,I will love this last 5 years I went for technical heavy positions rather than managerial roles (because I don’t like managing people) and I am ALWAYS the only female in the team. And in my team we’re at least 5 people, and at most 10. It’s possible that my experience is extremely unusual of course, but I’ve worked at quite a lot of different companies over the past 20 years, for startups, for banks, for open source houses, for consultancy firms, and with just a single exception, every female software developer has been Indian, Indonesian, Ukrainian, Costa Rican, South African, or from other countries, but not Dutch. Whereas the vast, vast majority of male developers Ive worked with were Dutch. So it’s not just that women in general are underrepresented, although they are, but that Dutch women in particular seem to be practically non-existent in my line of work. But if you know lots of female Dutch software developers, I’d love to be proven wrong.

A tester (QA / quality assurance) reviews executed code in end user format to ensure functionality is as expected. This means visual and executable designs are met. Their job is to verify that buttons are clickable, links redirect as expected, user inputs are recorded correctly and execute the Shut Up And Take My Money Meme Shirt Apart from…,I will love this expected outcome on the backend, etc. That’s seems like the easiest job if they don’t have to write reports. Do they have to do some coding/understand code a little bit? Quite often they write automated test frameworks in code. It is not remotely “the easiest job”, though there’s a lot of variation in how technical the approach is. Our current testers know more about the CI pipeline and deployments than I do. But even if they test manually, they need to be extremely thorough. QA involves a lot of meetings and communicating back and forth between different stakeholders to make sure things work according to specifications. Writing the tests is the easy part because most of it is copy paste, not a lot of complicated code involved.
