No way shareholders would be happy with them giving up such a large chunk of their user base. I guess they should keep pushing whatever buttons were pushed til it’s a promise. The power is in your hands. People. An empty threat at that. Meta actually following through on this would be the equivalent of roundhouse kicking yourself in the balls According to the article, Facebook will lose advertising revenue and big brand companies will take losses because of how much they depend on Facebook. Boohoo I rarely opened Facebook in the last couple of years but the only reason I don’t delete the account is the personal and group archives. Facebook/Instagram aren’t going to leave the EU market. This isn’t the first time they’ve pulled this and it won’t be the last. The fact that Apple introducing privacy settings costs them 10 billion usd in revenue shows you how bad any sort of data protection is for their profits. The main thing they had going for them was continued user growth in developing economies and they don’t even have that anymore 🙂 Unfortunately the US seems to be going in the opposite direction in terms of consumer protection, EARN IT being a prime example. “we couldn’t possibly stay in business with these onerous regulations basic privacy law. Of course we’re not trying to blackmail nations to bend their laws to our will, its just a basic fact we won’t be able to stay in business” Apple showed the way by giving people a choice. GDPR is giving people in Europe a choice and people choose “no” overwhelmingly when they know what they’re agreeing to.
