Texting, in other words, is a means to create a distance, rather than collapse it, a communication built on a sense of boundaries and—at least sometimes—respect for the Scoop Fsociety Shirt and I love this other’s schedule. Nearing a year of lockdown, in which the concept of personal time and space feels like a quixotic novelty that I may never regain within my busy house, I’ll make my peace with whatever solitude I can get.

Scoop Fsociety Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

A few days before the Scoop Fsociety Shirt and I love this power, and then the water, went out in our Houston town house during what’s been called a thousand-year winter storm, I was having a glass of wine with my neighbor in her garden. “Next time you want to evacuate, evacuate here,” she said, slightly joking. Laura gestured toward her newly renovated kitchen, on the other side of double glass doors. Laura has many pets, and a generator, and she’s a native Texan. She never evacuates. I moved to Texas from Brooklyn almost 19 years ago, and despite my tenure, I never stay. Hurricane season in Texas is blistering, and the inevitability of losing power is not something I’m willing to risk. I made a mental note to text Laura in June when storm season starts and walked the half block home in the damp cold.
