Like no matter what, you can’t stay in prison for longer than 21 years. I think Varg Vikernes said that, but consider the source I guess. Always wondered why prisons in the west were better then military and student accommodation, seeMs backwards to me ? Thats about the same set up as my actual room… I have the smallest room in he house and it’s actually about this big Norwegian prisons exists in US too. They are simply renamed “California Studio Apartment” and charged royalty tax in the form of house rent on one hand it makes sense that making the situation more comfortable for the prisoners has much bigger chances of them improving themselves and fixing themselves. on the other hand i still feel like there should be some punishment to being in prison. you kill someone innocent and you get this super good room and probably dont even have to pay any taxes etc… while the other person is f*cking dead and cant do anything with it, same with the dead persons friends and family. All the people in here saying that this is how a prison should look like, have never worked inside a US prison. Norway doesn’t have the gang issues in their lockups like US does and constant threat of inmates attacking each other based on race. I agree our prisons should focus more on helping inmates when they get out, but some of these dudes are really bad, bad people. I’m not saying I know what the answer is, but working in a prison with general population inmates is hard as all hell. And he only had to commit a heinous crime (insert any number of screwed up crimes here) to obtain it. I’m renaming Planet Earth to Planet Topsy Turvey.

This is because they focus on rehabilitation. They want prisoners to retain their humanity. They want them to serve their time and then rejoin society. A quick google shows their recidivism rate (how many get released and then go back to prison) is around 20% while here in the U.S. of A. it’s north of 76%. I am now going to go to Norway and commit a bailable offense just to live here. It’s nicer than my current apt… When you focus on rehabilitation, provide support after release, you aren’t packing a significant portion of your population in jails. I’ve always wondered what recidivism rates are like there. I keep hearing they do a better job with rehabilitation but haven’t seen any numbers supporting this According to this BBC article, the recidivism rate for Norwegian prisoners is 20% after two years and 25% after five years – compared to 50% after a single year in the UK.
