Makes sense, it was already polluted and with the Santa crabby holidays Christmas shirt and by the same token and large amount of infrastructure construction, traffic buildups and building construction its gonna get worse in winters. They’re burning crops/field stubble. The alternative (machine clearing) is expensive and there aren’t enough of them, so the wait is long. These are very poor small farms. Most studies show crop burning is somewhat closer to net neutral because you’re in theory replacing the carbon sinks (plants). That said, it’s a wasted opportunity to produce more sustainable, cleaner energy via biomass. Machine clearing for biomass + biochar usage would turn these small farms into incredible carbon sinks. 1 ton of biochar can sequester 3 tons of carbon. I remember my friend (originally from New Delhi) once told me the air was so bad his father contracted Tuberculosis and had to spend months off work because of it. Scary stuff

There are plenty of alternatives, but a combination of poverty, mismanagement, greed, and corruption means it doesn’t get done. I have to assume they have biomass facilities, but that’s probably also prohibitively time consuming and expensive for the Santa crabby holidays Christmas shirt and by the same token and farmers. Still, imagine the energy you could produce with the materials being burned currently. The utilities could pay farmers outright or give them discounts on services. It is. You’d think the government would subsidize or incentivize machine clearing at this point. It has to be cheaper than the burden on the healthcare system and productivity loss.
