They can’t make you work more than 48 hours in a week, and they have to pay overtime after 44 hours. The ESA is the minimum standard, your CA cannot give you less rights than it states, only better. Somebody’s union is dropping the ball here and needs a misrepresentation charge. Completely illegal! “Shutdown” means that they shut down but there is still government legislation to protect workers from overworking/burning out. OHS has definite policies to prevent this. They need continuous coverage they either divide manpower up to ensure it or bring it additional workers for the mandatory time off days. They can arrange this in shifts but this is definitely illegal.

I’d be checking the Runrig Going Home THe Ones That Got Away Fish Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this provincial labour laws AND your collective agreement, but, yes, the employer CAN require you to work 7 days with the appropriate compensation. I would contact your union rep or shop steward asap, in writing, and ask them for a copy of the contract. I’m fairly certain it isn’t legal not to have a day off for 6 weeks straight. I would say contact your MPP and Ontario’s Minster of Labour as well. The Minister of Labour should at least be able to give you a run down of the labour laws and if your union contract can supersede any of those laws. At my union workplace they technically could have you work 15 , 10 hour work days in a row then you have 15 days off or work and get paid double. In reality if you chose you could call in at somepoint during the 15 days of work and say your fatigued. That’s a worksafe workaround. Perhaps that is something you can try? A lawyer won’t help you. Your union rep is who you need to contact and they need to see whether this breaks your collective agreement
