Something I noticed would be how there isn’t a phrase for wishing someone to have a pleasant meal when they tell you they are about to eat or that they are eating. We say ‘poftă bună’ which I think it’s the Running on Mardi Gras shirt Besides,I will do this equivalent of the French ‘bon appétit’. When my coworkers go for lunch I would say stuff like ‘enjoy your meal’ and often they would look funny at me and be like ‘Um ok, thanks I guess’ thinking I’m sarcastic when I’m not. Amusingly, that’s exactly what ‘bon appétit’ is for in French: it’s from someone not eating with you, encouraging you to eat — i.e. the waiter. I’m a server and I always say “Enjoy!” when I have delivered a meal and make sure they have everything they need. One of my English teachers in Sweden had an English (or American?) husband. They spoke English to each other, but added the word “orka” from Swedish, meaning “to have the strength or energy for something”. It can be used when talking about physical strength or endurance: “Can you help me with the bag, I don’t orka carry it?” – but more often, it’s used in contexts where English speakers would say they “can’t be arsed/bothered to do something” (even if the Swedish word doesn’t imply that the task is unimportant, just that you lack the energy for it): “I don’t orka do my taxes tonight”.
