So wait he’d rather spend 20-50 on a gift than 15 on a bonus?!? Is he bad at math? Honestly the Rollin With My Homies Cheech Chong 2024 Shirt it is in the first place but housekeeper should be allowed to chose where their money was spent he’s a douche for even thinking this is okay. It is a nice idea to gift your cleaner. You don’t have the right to spend your roommates money. Just give her a card from you with your gift and don’t worry about the others you live with if they don’t participate. Your roommate is not required to pay more for services you receive just because you requested it. It’s not greed. It’s their money. Would it be a kind thing to do? Yes. But you cannot reasonably get upset at them for saying no. The shampoo comment was probably just to get you off their ass. You don’t get to say you’ve got this idea and you’re so generous by making other people pay, nor do you get to choose what people do with their own money. It’s good etiquette to give anyone that provides you a regular service throughout the year a holiday/end of year bonus.

It’s entirely possible his parents do pay extra or get their house keeper a gift. I have never discussed it with my family (because that seems like an odd conversation topic), but I’d be willing to bet his portion that they do. In some parts of India it is tradition to give house help, watchmen double their salary on Diwali. If not double, atleast a bonus. If you guys can afford it, why not? You’ll make their day.
