Simply by being inefficient and inconsiderate it also increases the amount of time cars on the road, congestion, and road rage, which can all contribute towards danger. Personally, I get anxiety if I’m in the middle lane. I was in an accident as a kid where a car slammed into the side of the car I was in on the highway. I don’t like having cars on all sides of me and feeing trapped and unable to move out of the way if need be. I also tend to drive over the speed limit (nothing too bad, like 10-15 miles on the freeway, under 10 on highways) so the right lane doesn’t work. I also tend to see it as different lanes for different drive lengths. If I’m driving less than 2 miles on the freeway? Right lane. Between 2-5? Middle lane. Over 5? Left lane. I find driving in the left lane helps me keep a constant speed which makes the 1-3+ hour drives between my house and visiting family and friends a lot smoother. If I notice someone coming up on me quickly I’ll move over to let them pass before getting back into the left lane. Where I’m at in Oregon, the I-5 freeway is also 2 lanes for around 100ish miles. You either drive in the left lane or get stuck behind all the semis and hauling trucks in the right that drive 10 mph under the speed limit. That left lane naturally turns into the left lane when the freeway moves back to 3 lanes.

As long as I’m not impeding the flow of traffic, risking other driver’s safety, and/or causing a backup behind me (2-3 cars) I personally don’t see an issue with driving like I do. I also get that I could be an asshole for doing this, but it doesn’t bother me. My fiancé drives in the middle lane and will occasionally call me out for driving and passing in the left lane Thanks for the explanation. I’d consider it okay as long as you got over as soon as you saw people coming up behind you. If they’re coming up behind me going like 90+ I will! Or if they’ve been behind me and are tailgating while I’m going 10-15 over I will. Most the time people have no issue when I’m driving 80 in the fast lane since it’s faster than driving in the middle lane, but again if I see like 2-3 cars behind me I’ll get over to let them pass if there’s space and it’s not heavy traffic all around, but that’s a very rare situation. I can only speak for oregon and Washington though
