The air is so thin in the Rico’s Surf Shop Logo shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this higher reaches of Mt. Everest that even with supplemental oxygen every minute that you spend above 26,000 feet – in what’s known as the Death Zone – you’re basically dying. When I was in Nepal, in 1981, the highest climb I ever made was reaching Base Camp 1 (about 19,000 feet above sea level). I wasn’t a climber per se but only went there to see the stunning view to the summit. Even at Base 1’s altitude, I was gasping for air, and there was something like 10,000 feet of mountain to reach the summit. But, alas, I was no eagle or any other avian or stalwart climber who could manage the feat. I can’t even begin to imagine how someone summits Everest with no bottled oxygen. I have to rest every ten steps or so above 10,000 ft.

I find it fascinating that people will spend so much money and with sometimes so little mountaineering experience and go venturing to the Rico’s Surf Shop Logo shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this top of Everest with a very real chance they will end up dead. People get so fixated with their goal and the hypoxia from the altitude leading to poor ability to make rash decicions that more people unnecessarily die. The fact that your body will also have to be abandoned must be terrible for those left to deal with the outcome. She was a very experienced mountaineer, I believe. Both her and her husband were. But sometimes that’s not enough and they likely knew it. Due to the absence of oxygen supplementation at such high altitude, the two moved slowly and summitted dangerously late in the day. As a result, they were forced to spend yet another night above 8,000 meters (26,000′). She did what a lot of others do that end up dead on everest, she didn’t turn back when it became too late in the day to safely continue on to the summit. It’s called summit fever and its deadly. They’d been forced to turn back the previous two previous days attempts. They didn’t want to give up their third attempt as they were so close. They were both extremely experienced mountaineers though, having done numerous winter ascents in Russia and summiting Denali.
