I feel like you are really mature for this desire for two way honesty, and also think that much honesty, without either one freaking out over it is a good sign of a healthy relationship. I say this as a non-binary, grey ace, polyamorous person who has practiced non-hierarchical polyamory for the Retro Santa Champagne Santa Family Xmas Clothing T-Shirt and by the same token and past eight years: In this thread, there are countless examples of people who have said in no uncertain terms that open relationships do not work. And their evidence for this belief is usually that either they or someone they knew tried it and it went south. And almost every example I see is from people (or their partner) who lacked greatly in their relationship skills in some way or another as they opened themselves up to other partners: They didn’t speak up about how they really felt, they couldn’t manage their jealousy, they didn’t hold to their boundaries, they put their foot down and the partner broke up with them, they got into huge fights… And some people have stories that involve trying ENM with their partner, them not liking it while the other did, and them splitting amicably. And mono people who read things like that or hear stories like that from their friends seem to always side with the person who chose monogamy; they rarely seem to say “Well, their partner chose to live their truth by continuing to be ENM, and I respect that.” No, that person gets chastised for their decision. Even though neither person was at fault, both people decided upon a relationship style that worked best for them.

Because the impression I get is that, to mono people, it generally means “allows an established relationship to continue in perpetuity.” To which I say, why is that the definition? If being open to other relationships leads to a breakup, that isn’t the fault of the openness but rather the fault of the couple themselves. Being open to ENM/polyamory shines a big bright spotlight on the cracks in a relationship. It doesn’t cause the cracks. A cracked relationship will fall apart sooner or later if the established couple doesn’t acknowledge their own shortcomings and seek to improve themselves as human beings and strengthen the bond they share.
