None of that happened. After travel bans, quarantine, and a newfound germaphobic streak confined me to my apartment, I began to indulge my most sedentary urges. When I wasn’t working, I existed in a fog. Each day after I wrapped up the Retired but forever a teacher at heart shirt but in fact I love this final video conference or Slack message, I leaned into limbo, zoned out for hours at a time, and berated myself for being in a creative rut. Despite the Retired but forever a teacher at heart shirt but in fact I love this change in location, my schedule remained the same. If I wasn’t checking an assignment off, I was coming up with another chore to avoid dealing with my complicated emotions. Once I “finished,” I lacked the energy to consider any of my actual needs. With constant news of police brutality, viral infection, governmental meltdown, and armed conspiracy theorists, eye candy and pleasure felt inappropriate.
