It sold for 24 years. The 5 was replaced by the super 5 (the one in the picture). The super 5 is a very different car. For example It had a transversal mounted engine instead the longitudinal one in the 5. I remember a meme from the 80’s where someone had spray painted Le Flat with an arrow pointing at a tire. I think it was a meme anyhow. I saw a stock race at Elkhart Lake. A Le Car held off some sort of Porsche for four laps. Each time they came around (it’s a 4 mile track) the crowd roared. The Le Car had the engine installed backwards, so the clutch bell housing faced forward. The camshaft extended through the bell housing to run the accessories like the alternator. If you tightened the alternator belt too tight the camshaft seal would leak oil onto the clutch and destroy it. I’m not surprised that a person today would not know about the LeCar. I’m pretty sure that all examples of them evaporated into a cloud of rust dust by the end of the 1980s. I think it had a weird worm gear gearbox drive mechanism. If any mechanics who worked on it can remember I’d love to know more. It meant that with some messing about you could reconfigure the gearbox so it had 4 reverse gears and 1 forwards one. The GT Turbos were good. Small. Light. Front wheel drive, turbo lag so quite exciting in the wet. I drove one to get it’s brakes done once. It was truly terrifying and I was only going a few blocks (I worked at a dealership, the thing had zero brake pads). 3 bolts holding on the tiny little wheelbarrow tires.

my mom told me that my dad had a french car named le car. I sort of believed her, but never told anyone cause i thought they would think i made it up. Nice to see it exists. I worked with a guy who owned one. He lived in New Hampshire (where personalized license plates are cheap) , and got a license plate which said “LE CAH”, imitating a New England accent. Quite common car around here at its time. If Your previous car was a R4, this was maybe an improvement. Maybe. After so many Years, I feel there are more historical R4s left around me, than R5 are. My mom had one as her first car.
