Catan is a fantasy word and a late addition to the Renfield movie nicolas cage shirt but in fact I love this title as to not create problems with the video game “the settlers” which was published during the development of the boardgame. Although it is possible that the Hebrew word was an inspiration it is not very likely and ist was definitely not choosen for it’s meaning. RIP Mr. Teuber. Thanks for all your games.Settlers is a great idea but not a well designed board game overall. It’s super successful and popular so being well designed isn’t holding it back, but I can’t think of any other board game that had to remove most of the rules in expansions to patch all the game design issues. Neat idea, very successful, but a complete game design mess that leaves most players upset if you play it enough. Keep in mind how different boardgames were during the early to mid 90s. That’s the environment Teuber developed Catan in. I believe at the time many of his ideas were fairly innovative. Many modern, more well-designed games stand on the shoulders of giants and Catan is certainly one of those giants.

I agree the Renfield movie nicolas cage shirt but in fact I love this expansions are a mess (though I only have experience with Seafarers and Cities & Knights). I much prefer the base game. I’ve been obsessed with Catan over the last year. Played the heck out of it. What are the design flaws you talk about? Firstly the expansion Explorers & Pirates disabled mechanics like development cards, longest road & largest army, it’s unheard of for an expansion to change base rules. That shows that they knew they had a mess that they couldn’t work around. The biggest flaw with Catan is that you don’t feel like you have a lot of autonomy, the starting position and dice rolls dictate most of winning and losing. You can know after you place your first 2 settlements if you’re statistically going to lose, there aren’t always 4 good starting locations, so its easy to pick last and feel like you are already behind.
