If a bank screws up and gives you money that isn’t yours you do not have to give it back in some scenarios. Morally he may have done wrong but he probably didn’t break the law. I don’t know all the particulars but there’s been plenty of times when the banks paid someone on accident and they didn’t have to give the money back.
