I don’t think it’s out of hatred. I genuinely think they think I need to finish it/I haven’t gotten enough food. FWIW, when my kids were toddlers (about 10-15 years ago) we were directed to a class on developing healthy eating habits, which included eating until you’re satiated, and not to push kids to make “happy plate” (ie force them to eat everything on the Raygunsite Michigan America’s Team Shirt but in fact I love this plate even if they’re already full). So, I will say that training and attitudes are changing… Literally shoving Motts Animal Fruit Gummies into my mouth as I read “dopamine release” and never felt more targeted in my life. It can difficult as a parent to know where to “hold the line”, so to speak. You want to allow for preferences and variable appetite, as especially for the latter it vary quite a bit as they age.

But for my older girl, she gradually whittled down the Raygunsite Michigan America’s Team Shirt but in fact I love this list of acceptable foods to basically rice, noodles, and frozen corn. She started throwing a fit every time she sat down at the table and the three approved foods were not there. We went through a long and painful adjustment process where she had to learn that she could not reject every food except her very favorites. In general, kids don’t really understand why they can’t eat their favorite foods all the time, unless you happen to get a chill kid that’s happy to eat whatever you put on their plate (our second daughter… so far). I used to be forced to eat foods I hated. For instance, green beans. I would literally be gagging uncontrollably, and my mum would be there going off at me to just eat it. I will never force my kid to eat foods she doesn’t like or if she is full. She is 6 and knows if she doesn’t eat the healthy parts of her dinner she doesn’t get a small dessert. She also knows if she try’s something new and doesn’t like it then that’s ok. Atleast she tried. She had a fairly well balanced diet even if she eats the same fruit and veg all the time
