The biggest thing that will hold Vietnam back – and is exactly what has held India back – is the widespread corruption. Huge companies like Apple and Samsung can afford to navigate and put up with it, but startups can not. If the government could get serious about stamping out corruption, Singapore-style, Vietnam’s possibilities are endless. Give government officials and police massive salary increases, but then have extremely harsh penalties (i.e. jail or ban from working in public service) for violating the public trust.
