I believe it was from the Raccoon let’s be more trash can and less trash can’t shirt besides I will buy this 1920’s or so? I had fun looking all through it, but I was surprised that any model with a bathroom only had one, on the second floor with the bedrooms, and quite a few models didn’t have bathrooms at all! I would have thought that the late 20’s was past the outhouse stage. One single-story model had one of the worst layouts I’ve ever seen – three bedrooms, and every single one opened directly onto a main room – living room, dining room, kitchen! I can only imagine the struggle that subsequent owners of these models have gone through, trying to do necessary renovations. In Britain, the bathroom situation you describe (“…only one, on the second floor with the bedrooms”) was overwhelmingly the norm until only VERY recently.

I actually really love looking at UK real estate partially for that reason – SO many renovations, and often on what’s essentially a single floor plan. It’s so interesting to see what people come up with. And money, lol. The one bathroom thing makes sense, especially in the Raccoon let’s be more trash can and less trash can’t shirt besides I will buy this older terraces where they might not even have HAD a bathroom originally at all – just the ones at the end of the gardens. Take what you can get, you know? But it’s just so impractical for the way we live now – it’s terrible for aging, and terrible for guests, etc etc. So renovating to add a downstairs loo just makes sense. Looking at those Aladdin plans, though, I was trying to figure out how to add even a simple WC to the main floor (of what might almost be something like a Queen Anne layout – I realize those were older, not sure what a similar layout would be called in the 20’s) without absolutely destroying the flow of the rooms, and it wasn’t easy. You can get factory built homes. They’re partially constructed in the factory rather than just having the materials sent out. Here’s a tour of one from This Old House.
