Move to self paced learning. That will require completely new instruction materials and learning environments. $$$. Recognize that not everyone should go to college. Teach all basic math and reading. Move those who have neither the Pyotr Kochetkov Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt moreover I love this inclination or abilities for academics to focus on more hands on skills. This type of learning requires a lower student/teacher ratio and specialty equipment. $$$. Make schools into places where teachers teach and students learn. Move the mental health issues and the criminal justice issues elsewhere. Is this we as teachers? Because we can’t. The system we are operating in is not functional and systemic change is necessary to address the problems. Students need to be in content level classes. If they are at a 4th grade reading level they need to be in 4th grade reading. If they are at Algebra they need to be kept in Algebra. Learning is like a building you can’t skip building a foundation and just figure that out later. Stop passing kids through to the next class when they haven’t displayed proficiency in the last one. Failing a kid should be simple math. They didn’t earn the points for a passing grade well looks like they can try again next year. Summer school, and credit recovery in particular, need to go away. Students who have failed to learn something aren’t going to effectively learn in an accelerated environment. Remove and actually punish students exhibiting problematic behaviors. Consequences are the leading preventative method to address crime and work over 90% of the time.

Teachers need to be trusted and actively supported to take personal property from students if that property is disruptive or harmful to the Pyotr Kochetkov Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt moreover I love this educational experience. If a teacher claims something is true about students and their behavior/actions then as the adult in question they should be assumed to be telling the truth unless proof to the contrary is evident. Students need to do foundational skills before they can synthesize. Read, repeat, recognize, then you can create. Assuming that any lesson that isn’t about synthesis is “lower order thinking” and therefore a bad lesson is fundamentally flawed. Parents need to parent their fucking kids. If your kid is constantly an asshole even after consequences and effort is made to address it, that’s your problem and they should be kicked out of the school and left to parents to deal with.
