As a teenager learning German. On exchange in Germany. Friend and I pathetically trying to chat up two German girls, desperately using our little bits of German. Cold night so one of us says ‘Ich bin kalt’. This actually means ‘I am frigid’ (correct phrase is Mir ist kalt). Not really anything spectacular but was in Spain ordering a McDonald’s and the Purple up golden rainbow for military kids T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this lad behind the counter said ‘menu?’ and I kept saying something like errr, the main menu? This went on for 3 or 4 turns before I just nodded and said yes. Turns out, menu in Spanish McDonald’s is meal, as in do you want that as a meal? Bit embarrassing, felt like a total out of sorts Brit. I went to the US a few times for work when I was in my late teens/early twenties, and nobody told me about the importance of tipping bar staff. I always over-tip in the US these days, to try and rebalance karma.

Purple up golden rainbow for military kids T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

I stayed with a Polish friend over new year once. Not sure if this is a widespread custom, but in her town the Purple up golden rainbow for military kids T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this local Catholic priest tours the town a few days into January wishing his parishioners well. A few households volunteer to provide snacks along the way including my friend’s family. So the priest comes in to chat, and he gives us all a little card with a saint and a prayer on it. They presumably explain to him that I’m visiting from England. He then says something to me in Polish (which I don’t understand) and holds out his hand. I found out afterwards he wanted to check which prayer card he had given me. But I…… shook the priest’s hand. Turns out this is not the done thing! Thankfully they all, including the priest, burst out laughing and I imagine to this day they’re telling the tale of the crazy English girl who shook the priest’s hand.
