Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are a complex neuropsychiatric disorder that manifests in symptoms resembling epileptic seizures but lacks electrical brain activity typically associated with epilepsy. These seizures are often triggered by psychological or emotional distress, leading to confusion, misdiagnosis, and significant stigma.

PNES are caused by a disruption in the communication between the brain and nervous system, typically triggered by psychological or emotional stressors. These triggers can include anxiety, trauma, depression, and relationship difficulties. Unlike epileptic seizures, PNES do not originate from abnormal electrical brain activity, and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings during seizures typically show no seizure-related changes.

Diagnosing PNES requires a thorough evaluation by a multidisciplinary team including neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists. Comprehensive patient history, physical examination, EEG, and other diagnostic tests are essential to differentiate PNES from epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Treatment for PNES focuses on identifying and addressing underlying psychological and emotional triggers, often through psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle modifications. Psychoeducation and support groups can also play a crucial role in empowering individuals to manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
